GM’s Summary:
Alric wins the final day of challenges, becoming the reigning Champion of Middenheim for 2512/2513. This affords him a chance to meet with the military leaders in the Palace, and to ask Chancellor Sparsam to excuse him from paying taxes over the next year (not to mention getting a clear explanation of the official system for creating new taxes). Sparsam agrees, in exchange for the new Champion’s informal escort on the way to and from the opera that evening, for psychological as well as physical protection. Adelyn also arranges for Alric to take Petra Liebkosen to the opera. Piers finds a place as a reserve player for the Castle Rock Coaches snotling football team and his few minutes on the pitch in their first game are quite successful, putting the little greenskin in the net in the last minute of play. Willow enters her pony in the horse show, but fails to win a blue ribbon. Alric delivers the Chancellor safely, then disappoints Petra by haggling openly with Adelyn over the scalped tickets found only at the last minute, which are for quite poor seats. Shortly after, Doctor Pavarotti insists Adelyn and Willow join him in his private box. Willow takes this opportunity to spy on Sparsam in his box, expecting him to be meeting someone there. Instead, he was on his own, inhaling some white powder. Alric ultimately returned to the Templar’s Arms to meet with Piers, while Adelyn and Willow went back to Pavarotti’s rooms. But as Adelyn had tried to slip him elvenhair poison again, he merely got sleepy and had a servant escort them out to a late dinner in the Outer Palace. There, Rallane, also recently returned from the opera, answered their questions about who might have influenced the Graf into accepting the latest tax reforms.

GM’s Summary:
Alric tries his hand at the challenges to the champion again, winning two slow, underwhelming quarterstaff battles, one against the Talabeclander from the day before and another against a Bretonnian named Piers, who he befriends afterwards with gifts of ale and new armour. The party try their luck at the archery again, with Adelyn beating the day’s shooters handily, but with the over all tourney medal going to Allavandrel Fanmaris. A second attempt to break into Gotthard Goebbels’s manor is called off due to much-increased guard patrols, while an attempt to sneak into the Merchants’ guild offices fails dismally from the start, with Alric almost cornered and caught by a number of guards.

GM’s Summary:
Alric Konrad loses his first challenge as new reigning city champion to a quarterstaff-wielding Talabeclander. Most of the party takes part in the second day of the Archery Tourney and Willow Alderberry takes the day’s second place. Attempts are made to intercept Gotthard Goebbels in the first performance of a new opera, but instead the party tries breaking into his mansion. They get as far as the stables before the alarm is raised and several guards are killed. Odric is badly injured for the second night in a row, vowing to leave the party, and little useful is learned.

GM’s Summary:
Breaking into the Komission for Trade, the party finds a record suggesting the key herb, elvenhair, that was used to poison the children the night before, was likely imported to a nearby warehouse owned by the Komission. Investigating there, a bunch of revellers arrive from the Carnival and enter the warehouse, leaving Willow trapped inside while the others remain scattered outside. Willow witnesses the revellers beginning a ritual that will likely result in the sacrifice of the kidnapped children, and takes a drastic risk to disrupt the apparent cultists. This works, and the rest of the party begins picking off cultists trying to chase her out the building. Odric is severely injured and most of the cultists escape into the dark city, under Morrslieb’s glow. The watch seizes the building and the children are placed under the care of the Cult of Ulric.

GM’s Summary:
With little else to be done about the kidnappings, and having already been subject to a pickpocketing prank, Alric signs up to challenge the city’s champion and somehow wins. The rest of the day is spent investigating revellers among the Carnival and trying to gain access to the Palace, the Komission for Trade and the Merchants’ Guild, to try and find out where the elvenhair used in the previous night’s poison might have come from.

GM’s Summary:
The party spends the day plotting to rob the city’s tax wagon, and ultimately succeed in a not too elaborate, not too violent ambush, while the rest of the city rushes off to enjoy the Geheimnistag Eve childrens’ parade. On the way back, Adelyn notices a group distributing fruit in a slightly unusual manner, and retrieves a lone pear they leave behind. They gather back at the Templar’s Arms to count their takings and are disappointed to discover it’s mostly pennies. Odric goes out to distribute these to the children in the parade, eventually noticing that some of them seem to be disappearing. He catches someone in the act of snatching a dazed child and arrests what later turns out to be a woman who looks very, very much like a large, burly man. At the same time, a clue to the child’s sudden stupor comes from Adelyn tricking Willow into trying some of the found pear, which almost knocks the halfling out. The party keeps an eye on the rest of the parade, and it’s clear that many children have gone missing, but nothing else is learned. Their prisoner is also little help, and so she is turned over to the High Wizard. Her dagger has a symbol that looks like a green scepter on it, which checks with Josef suggest might have some connection with some uncertain entity known as ‘Jade Scepter’.

GM’s Summary:
Finally reaching Middenheim, the party faces heavy taxes upon trying to enter the city gates, selling off their horses and wagon to help cover their expenses. A scheme is hatched to observe & steal back their taxes. Adelyn and Alric immediately make contacts with the city’s gangs, while the others are slower finding their feet in the new city. Adelyn and Willow attempt to deliver their cargo to its destination in the city, but on asking a guard about the address, they’re brought in for questioning and their crate seized. It seems the whole building at that address had been raided and purged by witch-hunters. The party delivers a letter to the Ar-Ulric, who asks them to investigate the city’s sudden increase in taxes and the renegade Sons of Ulric cult. Alric then also reports to High Wizard Helseher, who gives him a similar tax-related task, as well as assigning him to the city’s Carnival magic display team.

GM’s Summary:
Alric diverts from the main party to deliver a letter to a way shrine, meeting a travelling halfling, Willow Alderberry heading the same way. At the Place of Shining Stone, they are barred from entering by Templars of the Fiery Heart, while a private ceremony takes place. Snooping around, Alric uncovers an ambushing force of Ulric worshippers, who viciously attack the Sigmarites, but are slaughtered by the masterful knights. Inside the shrine, the Grand Theogonist has also been attacked, and Alric helps to defend him. The pair are thanked, but sent on their way while the shrine is re-sanctified.

GM’s Summary:
The party sails on the Blue Salmon to Altdorf, then buys a wagon and horses to travel to Middenheim, meeting many travellers along the way, many with news, but little that excites the party. A detour to Delberz saw Alric promoted to full apprentice of the Amethyst Order, as well as revealing Hans-Peter Schiller’s wild desire to kill the party. He is killed himself instead.

GM’s Summary:
Carrying trade goods to finance the survivors of Wittgendorf, the Ungenannt returns to Kemperbad, where a new deal is struck with Matthias Blucher to carry a cargo to Marienburg. The construction of a new barge is also commissioned, only a few hours before the Ungenannt catches fire and sinks to the bottom of the Reik. The party agrees to run a lesser errand for Blucher to Middenheim instead.
